Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Samson et Dalila” is a grand opera that weaves a tale of passion, betrayal, and redemption. Originating from a libretto by Ferdinand Lemaire, it was first performed in 1877. The opera’s genesis lies in the biblical narrative of Samson, the Herculean figure whose strength was unrivaled, and Delilah, the seductress who would be his downfall1. Saint-Saëns’ composition is a marvel of French opera, with melodies that soar to the heavens, capturing the tumult of human emotion. Its orchestration is a
tapestry of innovation, painting scenes of Delilah’s
beguiling charm and Samson’s tragic heroism.
The opera’s highlights: the Bacchanale, with its
exotic and frenetic orgiastic fervor; and the sensuous
“Mon cœur s’ouvre à ta voix,” is a testament to its
enduring beauty, a melody that lingers long after
the curtain falls. “Samson et Dalila” stands as a
monument to the power of music to tell the most
human of stories. Kevin Courtemanche appears as
Samson while Kathleen Reveille lends her wonderfully dusky mezzo to the role of Dalila. Jeffrey Goble as the High Priest of Dagon, and Andrew Martens as Abimélech and the Old Hebrew complete the cast.
